This year (2017-2018) will be another outstanding opportunity to promote regular physical activity with students at Hilltop. During CART P.E., students will develop a variety of basic movement and manipulative skills so they will experience success and feel comfortable during physical activity pursuits. CART physical education classes focus on both health-related fitness and skill related fitness. Areas of health related fitness include the development of muscular strength and endurance, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility and locomotor skills. In the area of skill-related fitness, we work on developing skills to participate effectively in a wide range of games and activities. Some of the skills taught include dribbling, passing, trapping, shooting, throwing, catching, running, jumping, serving, and striking. General game/activity skills include moving to the ball, finding open space, cutting to get free, receiving passes on the move, passing to open targets, defending the ball, intercepting, guarding a player, and defending an area. I want students to learn to move skillfully with confidence in a wide variety of activities, and how to stay healthy and physically active for the rest of their lives.
Good sportsmanship (playing fair, responsibility, following rules, winning and losing gracefully, teamwork, cooperating with and encouraging others) will be stressed. During P.E. games, I also encourage problem solving, critical thinking, and goal setting. It is my goal to prepare your child with the knowledge, skills, and motivation so that they will become tomorrow's healthy and physically literate adult.
The CART P.E. program also includes an emphasis on healthy eating and other healthy habits in addition to physical conditioning and fitness. We discuss self-responsibility and goal setting for both physical activity and healthy food choices. Additionally, basic injury prevention and safety during all classes is emphasized.
Thank you for your support in helping ensure your child is dressed properly during CART P.E. days and for keeping them physically active and encouraging healthy food choices at home.
